James Swan and Design Like an Egyptian…..?
With political strife as prevalent as home baked goods at a church picnic there is much about North Africa that our Around the World Decorating Tour will skip. We can always return when life and limb are not threatened. We will make a brief stop in Egypt which, while not exactly a social or political cake walk these days does hold a certain aesthetic intrigue worth peaking at. Particularly with Madonna’s homage to the ideals of Egyptian design in her big half-time entrance at last nights Super Bowl who could resist a quick look at some marvelously misbegotten misfires of this historic and, at times, hyste
James Swan Ambles Around The Azores
It’s not often that a destination disappoints me but after flying the 900+ miles from Lisbon into the middle of the North Atlantic I’ve found my experience of The Archipelago of The Azores a let down. I suppose it is fine if you want to wander the craggy coastlines and beaches of its nine volcanic islands or sail it’s dazzling blue waters but when it comes to exploring beautiful homes and graceful interiors there’s hardly a handful of anything to look at, let alone to find of interest. It’s as if everyone just wants to stay outdoors doing outdoors things and then go inside just to sleep and eat. Not very civilized if you as me....
James Swan and Look What We Found In Ibiza
A spin throughSpainwould not be complete without a stop on the party island of Catalana or, as most know it,Ibiza. World renowned for its club scene the civil authorities have been on a recent crusade to broaden the island’s appeal to include wealthy young families. The club-centric establishment isn’t convinced so the dancing goes on even while re-branding efforts continue. Island life on this modern minded slice of the Mediterranean is all about what’s new and of the moment which makes the local interiors equally current, if not entirely compelling. While we’ve seen worse on our...
James Swan’s Around the World Decorating Tour: Spain
Through the dutiful application of planes, trains and antibiotics we’re back on the road today, ticking off yet another designing destination on our Around the World Decorating Tour. From the stylish shores of France last week we slip across her south west boarder into Spain the land of conquistadores, crusades and, as we’ll discover in this morning’s album, some rather questionable decorating decisions. The Kingdom of Spain doesn’t lack history, intrigue or a richly decorated past but even this illustrious past, filled with art, architecture and a decidedly regional perspe

Around The World Decorating Tour; France
With a few twists and turns on the mountainous highways of Switzerland we find ourselves crossing the border into France, the next destination on our Around the World Decorating Trip. For over 500 years the French Republic has been a major world power with strong cultural, economic, military and political influence. Its reach has influenced life in all parts ofEuropeand has extended around the world to its overseas territories as well as most every neighboring country. To say that France has influenced the way we live, dress and govern would be a colossal understatement for the roots of much of our...
Book Review: Small Space Organizing
Loving a beautiful interior, as I do, I came to believe long ago that the first step toward an elevated experience of grace and tranquility is the elimination clutter. In some homes this can be a greater challenge than in others but no home is uniquely immune from the tug of clutter. Like the gremlins that, in plain sight, snatch socks from the dryer clutter sneaks up on the best of us. Reminders, tips and tools to stave off the encroachment of clutter in our homes and lives can be a welcome reminder that the war on clutter can be won. So when a new book on home organization comes across my desk I’m always keen on a refresher course. My pleasure was doubled recently when a new book, “Small Space Organizing” by Kathryn Bechen, landed on the top of...
